📝 #AlexOvechkin Breaks #WayneGretzky's NHL Record! 🏒
Alex Ovechkin, 39, has surpassed what was once thought impossible, breaking Wayne Gretzky's longstanding NHL career goals record. On Sunday, Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal against the New York Islanders with a wrist shot past goalie Ilya Sorokin, helping the Washington Capitals narrow the lead to 2-1 in the second period.
The game paused for several minutes as Ovechkin celebrated with his team and shook hands with Islanders members. A tribute video was played at UBS Arena, and Gretzky congratulated Ovechkin on the ice.
"The Great 8" now has 42 goals this season, despite missing 16 games due to a broken fibula. He has achieved 40 or more goals in 14 seasons, an NHL record.
Gretzky, "the Great One," scored 894 goals in his 20-year career, ending in 1999. He still holds records for most points (2,857) and assists (1,963). Gretzky was present when Ovechkin tied his record against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Ovechkin, the No. 1 pick in the 2004 draft, has played his entire NHL career with the Capitals. The 12-time All-Star won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2018 when the Capitals won their first Stanley Cup. He is a three-time NHL MVP and has led the league in goals nine times in his 20 seasons.
Ovechkin holds other NHL records, including most power-play goals, game-winning goals, and shots on goal, with this latest record being his most notable. #NHLRecords #HockeyLegend #TheGreat8 🌟🥅
